Construction Youth Trust

Construction Youth Trust (CYT) is a charity providing an integrated service to young people in order to help them access opportunities in the construction industry. The Trust supports those who face barriers into work due to their financial circumstances, lack of awareness of opportunities, low self-esteem, gender or ethnicity.

The charity applied for a grant towards the cost of refurbishing a mobile classroom: a fully equipped van with tools and materials to provide practical learning sessions for young people aged 16-30. Distance can be a barrier to learning for a large number of young people but the flexibility of the Mobile Classroom means that the charity can deliver meaningful vocational learning in the heart of communities and engage young people who are not in education, employment or training.

The Foundation awarded a grant of £5,700 towards the project and CYT are now seeing the benefits of having such an accessible method of providing training.

The Mobile Classroom has increased the capacity of the Trust to deliver a broader range of programmes, therefore enabling them to reach out to a wider number of young people. They are also now able to approach a more extensive range of community organisations, which they work alongside, because the classroom is able to travel directly to specific locations and deliver tailor-made courses.

Some of the participants said of their experience with Construction Youth Trust:

I never imagined I’d be able to do all these jobs myself but now I feel confident enough to turn my hand to most things.”

“When an opportunity like this comes along you’ve got to grab it with both hands. It’ll give me the freedom to do what I want to do. I was unemployed for a year and now I can’t wait to start work and invest in my future.”

“I’m absolutely loving it; I don’t want it to end. My confidence has improved dramatically and I’ve learnt skills that will stay with me for life.”
