Carlisle Mencap

Carlisle MENCAP provides life-long person centred support for people with learning disabilities and their families in North Cumbria. Local people with disabled children set up the charity in 1968. Today they have over 150 members and provide services for over 300 people. The board of trustees are all local people most of whom either have learning disabilities or are family members. Services include residential respite care for adults, children’s home based respite, community support, young people’s clubs, young people’s holidays, family support workers for young people with autism, holidays, leisure activities and befriending.

Clothworkers’ awarded a grant of £17,000 in 2011 towards equipping the Grace Little Centre for disabled children. The centre has hi tech moving and handling equipment which is accessible to many children with diverse abilities. There are 4 en suite bedrooms for overnight stays as well as an accessible kitchen. The activity wing includes a sensory room, soft play room, IT and arts and crafts area.

Our grant was used to purchase furniture for the sensory room and equipment for the soft play room. The Little centre has now been open for over a year with around 100 children a year benefitting.
